Approach and anchoring

Reached from the Canal du Midi only. Nearest locks are Castanet downstream and Vic upstream. Maximum draught 1,4 m and air draft 3,3 m under the canal bridges, in line with the Freycinet gauge of the Canal du Midi. Speed limited to 8 km/h on the canal, 3 km/h in the basin.

Practical

About 140 berths on pontoons, water and electricity at each, sanitary block with showers, fuel by jerrycan. Base for several hire-boat companies operating week charters on the Canal du Midi. Metro line B station Ramonville at 600 m links to central Toulouse in about 15 minutes.

Ashore

Voie verte du Canal du Midi, part of the EuroVelo 8 Mediterranean route, passes the port and runs 240 km down to Sète. Bike hire at the marina. Port Saint-Sauveur in central Toulouse is 6 km downstream by water or canal-side cycling. Supermarket and restaurants in Ramonville village at 400 m.

History

The Canal du Midi was built by Pierre-Paul Riquet between 1666 and 1681 to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean via the Garonne and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996. Port Sud was opened in the 1980s as the first private pleasure port on the canal and remains a hire-boat base.

Story

The plane trees lining the Canal du Midi, many planted in the nineteenth century to consolidate the banks, have been dying since 2006 from canker stain and are being replaced by resistant species along the entire 240 km of canal.
