Anchorage off Port O'Connor on the south-west shore of Matagorda Bay, Texas, on the north side of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The town sits where the GIWW meets Matagorda and Espiritu Santo Bays. The bottom is sand. There is no purpose-built anchorage for sailing yachts; boats anchor in the lee of the Matagorda Bay barrier islands or at the north-west end of the bay. Watch the shallow water across much of the bay.
Practical
St Christopher's Marina lies 3.2 miles west on the Matagorda Bay shore. Two small marine facilities in town may take a visiting boat, but call ahead. The GIWW links Espiritu Santo Bay, San Antonio Bay, the jetties and offshore waters.
Ashore
Port O'Connor is a small fishing community; angling is the main draw, followed by recreational boating. The Port O'Connor paddling trail, set up by Texas Parks and Wildlife, runs through the back bays for those carrying a tender or kayak.
