Approach and anchoring
Canal navigation only, no tidal constraints. The canal follows the Aron valley and reaches Châtillon by lock sequence. Speed limit 6 km/h on the canal. Baye basin lies 7.7 NM north and Locaboat base 10.6 NM north.
Practical
Pontoon and bollards along the canal quay, typical of Canal du Nivernais halts. Hire-boat traffic in season. Village shops, bakery and cafes within walking distance of the port.
Ashore
Chateau of Chatillon-en-Bazois, a 13th to 16th century fortified residence visible from the canal. Morvan regional natural park starts a few kilometres east with marked hiking trails. Canal towpath open to walkers and cyclists along the whole Nivernais route.
History
The Canal du Nivernais was built between 1784 and 1843, originally to float firewood from the Morvan forests towards Paris. Chatillon-en-Bazois was one of its administrative relay points.
