Large natural harbour on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, sheltered behind the Ediz Hook sand spit, on the north shore of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Ediz Hook curves nearly 3 miles northeast into the strait and shelters the bay from the swell that runs eastward off the Pacific. The harbour is deep, used by tankers and cruise ships, so the anchorage off Port Angeles lies in the southern part over a mud bottom. It is open to the south and southeast.

Practical

Holding is mud. Anchored boats land at the city dinghy float for shops and fuel in the town centre. The Black Ball ferry to Victoria, British Columbia, runs from the downtown terminal.

Ashore

Olympic National Park headquarters and visitor centre sit on the edge of town, with the road climbing to Hurricane Ridge for views over the Olympic Mountains. The Olympic Discovery Trail follows the waterfront for walking and cycling.

History

The harbour was visited in 1791 by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza, who named it Puerto de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles.
