Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approached through Wrangell Narrows, a winding channel some 22 miles long marked by about 60 lights and buoys. Too shallow and narrow for large cruise ships. The town has three working harbours with fuel, water and shore power.

Practical

A commercial fishing port with around two dozen licensed charter boats. Anchorage off the town has an algae and mud bottom. Sheltered from north-west through north and from south-east, more open to the east.

Ashore

Provisions, the Clausen Memorial Museum and the Sons of Norway hall are within the town. Wrangell Narrows is a recognised birding route, good for sea kayaking on protected water.

History

The Norwegian immigrant Peter Buschmann settled here in the 1890s, building a cannery, sawmill and docks. By 1905 three canneries were running, and the Scandinavian community earned the town its nickname Little Norway.
