Ashore
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is roughly 25 km west, with hiking and the Lake of the Clouds overlook. The Ontonagon Lighthouse at the river mouth holds copper mining and Great Lakes shipping artefacts.
History
Ontonagon is among the oldest permanent settlements on the south shore of Lake Superior. Its port shipped copper and silver ore from the Porcupine Mountains mines through the 19th century until the trade declined around 1900.
