Guide
Approach and anchoring
Coves around the island give shelter from all wind directions, with the choice of anchorage made to suit the weather on the day. The bottom mixes rock, weed and mud, so set the anchor on a clear patch of mud and check it holds before settling.
Practical
No facilities at the island. The nearest services lie about 26 miles north-west at the Port of Homer deep-water dock, with a boatyard a little further at Northern Enterprises. Boats carry all fuel, water and provisions aboard.
History
Nuka Island held the only fox farm within the bounds of what is now Kenai Fjords National Park, run by Herring Pete Sather and his wife Josephine from the 1920s. Pete's Cove, on the western shore, is named after him, and the homestead site is now part of the national park.
