Seafood dealer and small marina on the St Marks River at St Marks, on Florida's Big Bend coast.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from Apalachee Bay by the buoyed St Marks River channel, which carries the only deep water across a wide expanse of shallows. St Marks Light stands on the east side of the river entrance. Both river and bay shoal quickly, and grounding on the mud is common off the marked channel.
Practical
Working seafood business at 28 Lynn Circle, known for Florida stone crab. Open Monday to Saturday, 0830 to 1630, closed Sunday. Limited dockage on the river. Fuel, repairs and visitor berths are at the larger marinas around the bend, 7 miles south-west.
History
St Marks Light, on the east side of the river mouth, is the second-oldest light station in Florida. The town sits beside San Marcos de Apalache, a Spanish fort site dating from the 17th century.
