Approach and anchoring

Enter the gulf from the east, leaving the Île de San Ciprianu to the north. Îlot Ziglione lies off the eastern shore, about 0.9 NM east of Porto-Vecchio town. Sheltered from N through SE. Open to the west. Bottom of seagrass and mud. Posidonia meadow is classified, anchoring on the grass is regulated under the ZMEL scheme.

Practical

Forain anchorage. Port of Porto-Vecchio 0.9 NM west with fuel, water, electricity and a 220-berth marina. Marine Group boatyard 0.8 NM west for lift-out and repairs.

Ashore

Old citadel of Porto-Vecchio, 1 km inland from the port, built by the Genoese from 1539. Saline beaches at Santa Giulia and Palombaggia lie 5 km south with fine white sand.

History

Porto-Vecchio was founded by the Bank of Saint George in 1539 as part of the Genoese fortification of Corsica. The salt pans south of the gulf supplied the Genoese Republic until the 18th century.
