Halte HEIDWILLER

Heidwiller, France
Type
Harbour

Canal halt on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, southern Alsace, in the village of Heidwiller between Mulhouse and Dannemarie.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Quay reached through the branch of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin that climbs the Largue valley toward the summit level of the Belfort gap. A series of automatic locks manages the descent. Standard VNF waterway dimensions apply, draught limited to about 1.8 m.

Practical

Free short quay with a few bollards for narrow boats and river cruisers. No water or electricity at the halt itself. Nearest services at Port Plaisance de Mulhouse 13 km downstream and at Dannemarie 9 km upstream.

Ashore

Village of Heidwiller has a bakery and a small grocery within 400 m of the quay. The EuroVelo 6 cycle route runs along the towpath, giving flat riding toward Mulhouse in one direction and Montbéliard in the other. The Étang de Heidwiller, a fishing pond set among woodland, is at 1 km.

History

The Canal du Rhône au Rhin was completed in 1834 to link the Saône basin with the Rhine through the Belfort gap. The Heidwiller stretch follows the Largue valley, originally dug with forty-odd locks and now carrying mostly leisure traffic since commercial barging ceased in the 1960s.
