Approach and anchoring
Lies in Grand Portage Bay on the Minnesota North Shore, close to the Ontario border. A protected launch ramp sits within the basin. The Isle Royale ferries run from the adjacent Hat Point Marina.
Practical
About 30 berths for boats up to 30 feet. Convenience store, fuel sales, heads and a gravel car and trailer park. Michigan fishing licences sold for those fishing out of Isle Royale. Open early May to October. RV and tent sites adjacent to the marina. Owned and run by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
Ashore
Grand Portage National Monument, a reconstructed 18th-century fur-trade depot, is close by. The Grand Portage trail, an 8.5-mile historic carrying route to the Pigeon River, starts at the monument stockade. The Grand Portage Lodge and Casino is within a short drive.
History
Grand Portage was a hub of the North American fur trade in the late 1700s, where voyageurs carried canoes and goods around the unnavigable lower Pigeon River. The North West Company ran a major depot here. The site is now a National Monument managed with the Grand Portage Band.
