Elfin Cove

Elfin Cove, United StatesAlaska
Type
Harbour

Remote fishing community on the north-west side of Chichagof Island, 85 miles west of Juneau, reachable only by boat or float plane.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Enter from Cross Sound through the narrow inlet on the west side of Chichagof Island. The inner cove gives full shelter in all winds. No road access; the harbour is the only way in apart from float planes from Juneau.

Practical

Public floats managed by the City of Elfin Cove with seasonal moorage and limited transient space. Fuel dock with diesel and petrol on the boardwalk. General store, post office and a handful of fishing lodges on the wooden boardwalk. No cars and no roads.

Ashore

The boardwalk loops the cove on stilts and connects all dwellings, lodges and the store on foot. Salmon, halibut and rockfish fishing in Cross Sound and Icy Strait, with humpback whales feeding offshore in summer.

History

Settled in the 1920s as a halibut fishing base, the cove kept its boardwalk layout because the steep shoreline left no room for roads. Year-round population sits around 16 and climbs near 200 during the summer fishing season.
