Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Vilaine through the centre of Rennes, the lock is the first of the ascent toward Dinan. Maximum draught 1,20 m, lock chamber suits vessels up to the Freycinet gauge. Lock operated by Région Bretagne during the navigation season.
Practical
4 visitor berths on the pontoon upstream of the lock. Water and electricity on site. Bakery and shops in the Saint-Martin district of Rennes within 500 m.
Ashore
Towpath south into central Rennes in 2 km, passing the Parc des Prairies Saint-Martin, 30 hectares of urban wetland reopened in 2021. Voie verte V2 follows the canal north toward Dinan for cycling.
History
The canal d'Ille-et-Rance was built between 1804 and 1832 to link Rennes to Saint-Malo via the Rance, with 48 locks over 85 km.
