Small Loire river landing below the Château de Chaumont, in the Loir-et-Cher département, Centre-Val de Loire.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Shallow sand-bank river, no reliable depth for keel boats. Access from the right bank only, via the quay at the foot of the château. Currents are strong after spring rain and sandbanks shift seasonally. Traditional flat-bottomed toues and futreaux use it year round.
Practical
No marina services, no fuel, no electricity. Parking along the parapet of the riverside road. Village shops on the main street at 300 m: bakery, grocery, post office. Train station Onzain-Chaumont-sur-Loire on the opposite bank at 2 km by the Pont de Chaumont.
Ashore
Château de Chaumont and its Domaine regional at 400 m uphill, host of the Festival International des Jardins from late April to November. Loire à Vélo cycle route EV6 runs along the river in front of the quay. Village of Chaumont-sur-Loire itself counts around 1 000 inhabitants.
History
The Loire between Orléans and Chalonnes is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2000. The Château de Chaumont, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, was owned by Catherine de Médicis who swapped it with Diane de Poitiers for Chenonceau in 1560.
