Deep-water marina on Virginia's Eastern Shore, inside the dredged Cape Charles harbour at the southern tip of the Delmarva peninsula, on the bayside of the Chesapeake.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from Chesapeake Bay through the buoyed Cherrystone Inlet entrance, between the stone jetties built by the US Army Corps in 1890. Depth in the channel and along the docks runs around 18 feet, so draught is not the limiting factor. Call on VHF 16 before entering. Strong tidal streams set across the entrance on a flooding tide.
Practical
About 22 berths split between 18 perpendicular slips and a long face dock, taking vessels up to 240 feet. A 75-ton travel lift covers boats up to 110 feet LOA and 25 feet beam. Bulk fuel is delivered by truck with 24 hours' notice rather than from a fuel berth. Showers, ships store, WiFi and a courtesy van on site. Yanmar and Beta Marine certified technicians work in the yard.
Ashore
The 1884 grid of Cape Charles town starts a five-minute walk from the docks, with restaurants, the public beach on Chesapeake Bay and the historic district listed on the National Register. Bay Creek golf and the Cape Charles natural area reserve are 3 miles south. Kiptopeke State Park, with its line of sunken concrete ships, is 8 miles down the bayside.
History
Cape Charles was laid out in 1884 by William L. Scott and Alexander Cassatt as the southern railhead of the Pennsylvania Railroad's extension down the Delmarva peninsula, where freight cars were loaded onto barges across the bay to Norfolk. By 1912 the harbour handled 2.5 million tons of freight a year.
