Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached through the marked channel that rings Garden Key and Fort Jefferson. The entrance to the harbour is narrow, with shoals to either side, so a careful approach is needed. Sand bottom. The site sits more than 60 miles offshore with no all-weather shelter.
Practical
No facilities on site, and the nearest fuel and supplies are at Key West. Boaters must bring all fresh water, food and fuel. Bird Key Harbor is the designated anchorage for commercial fishing vessels under federal park regulations.
Ashore
Fort Jefferson on Garden Key, a 19th-century coastal fortress, is reached by tender. The surrounding seagrass flats and patch reefs are open to snorkelling, and the islands are a major stopover for migrating birds in spring.
