Approach and anchoring

Approach from seaward avoiding the Posidonia seagrass beds which are protected. Shelter holds from NE and E; the bay is open to the S, SE, SW and to the libeccio blowing from the SW. Anchoring on rock or seagrass is discouraged under the marine park rules. Anchor in about 7 m on a patch of hard sand, lined up with the cove, where a west to north-west wind keeps the boat on axis. Best taken as a daytime stop in settled weather.

Practical

No services on site. Port de Girolata 2.6 nm E offers a small mooring field and a handful of restaurants reachable only by sea or by footpath. Galéria 5.3 nm NE for the nearest road-accessible village and water point.

Ashore

Réserve naturelle de Scandola, classified UNESCO World Heritage in 1983 for its porphyry cliffs and sea caves. A sea cave and a good dive lie just to the north, reached by dinghy or paddleboard. Hamlet of Girolata reached by the sentier du facteur from Osani in 2 hours. No motorised road access.

History

The Scandola peninsula was established as France's first combined land and sea nature reserve in 1975.
