Sand Point Harbor
- Maximum draught
- 13 ft
Working harbour on Humboldt Bay, on the west side of Popof Island in the Shumagin group, off the south coast of the Alaska Peninsula.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Gulf of Alaska through Unga Strait, then into Humboldt Bay sheltered by Popof Island. The town has two basins: the Robert E. Galovin Small Boat Harbor refloated in 2014 and the newer AEB harbour. Around 140 berths in total. Approach depths allow drafts up to 4 metres. No road link to the mainland, so the harbour is the lifeline.
Practical
Floats with electricity and potable water, fire suppression and uplands power. Marine fuel available at the Trident Seafoods plant, which also handles repairs. Provisions in town. Limited Alaska Marine Highway ferry calls in May, July, August and September.
Ashore
Sand Point village sits a few minutes' walk from the harbour, with a small store, post office and clinic. Walking tracks lead across Popof Island. The Russian Orthodox St Nicholas Chapel stands above the harbour.
History
Founded in 1898 as a cod fishing and trading station by a San Francisco company, with Aleut and Scandinavian crews settling around the salting works. Today Sand Point hosts the largest fishing fleet in the Aleutian Chain, working pollock, cod, salmon and halibut grounds.
