Large marina on the right bank of the Gironde estuary mouth, 1000 berths, max draught 2.5 m, VHF 9.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach via the Passe de l'Ouest or the Grande Passe de l'Ouest, then the buoyed channel to the marina entrance. Strong tidal streams run in the estuary, up to 3 knots. The marina stays accessible at all tides, but the final approach shoals, so deeper boats should check depth and time the tide; entering roughly two hours after low water suits a 1.8 m draught. Run the south and west passes in daylight, keep to the well-marked channel used by shipping, and do not obstruct the estuary ferries. Call VHF 9 on approach.
Practical
1000 berths across 11 pontoons, max length 25 m. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol open year-round. Water, electricity, laundry, Wi-Fi. The washrooms have been renovated and are clean, though showers run on tokens from the office, which shuts at 17:30, so collect them on arrival. The third night is free when two are paid. Staff send access codes and a berth plan by email and help with mooring, and de-masting and rigging can be arranged with the 50-tonne travelift. Check the final invoice, as some crews have been billed for extra nights after leaving.
Ashore
Grande Conche beach at 500 m, 2 km of sand inside the bay. Notre-Dame de Royan church, built in reinforced concrete between 1955 and 1958 by Guillaume Gillet and listed as a 20th-century heritage monument, at 600 m. A large covered market runs daily nearby, with bike hire beside the marina and a train station within walking distance with connections to Bordeaux and La Rochelle. Ferry to Le Verdon leaves from Port Bloc.
History
Royan was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombing in January and April 1945. The town was rebuilt in the 1950s following a modernist masterplan, earning it the Ville d'Art et d'Histoire label for 20th-century architecture.
