Man-made island in central Galveston Bay, Texas, used as an anchorage with a sandy mud bottom and depths of around 8 to 9 feet.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south-east to keep clear of the shoal water on the other sides. The anchorage gives good holding but lies open to winds and wakes from south-west through north-west. Watch for the ship traffic in the nearby Houston Ship Channel.
History
The island sank below the surface in the early 1990s through subsidence and erosion. It was rebuilt in 2003 in a ten-month project using material dredged from navigation channel works, which also created a bird sanctuary at its northern end and shell beds for oysters.
