Approach and anchoring
Access from the canal only. Maximum draught 1.5 m, as signed at the entrance. Locks operated by Voies Navigables de France. Many berths are taken by residential and liveaboard barges and visitor space can be limited, with some places lying against a sloping bank that call for care when stepping ashore.
Practical
Shops of Saint-Satur within 400 m. Out of season the capitainerie and the campsite reception close, leaving no staffed facilities, though water and electricity on the quay may still be usable. Halte de Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre 1.4 nm to the S, halte des Fouchards 4.5 nm to the N.
Ashore
Hilltop village of Sancerre 3 km from the port, reached by a steep road or the GR 31 footpath, with views over the Loire valley. Sancerre AOC vineyards surround the village, white wines from Sauvignon blanc and reds from Pinot noir. Crottin de Chavignol goat cheese AOP produced in the neighbouring commune.
History
Saint-Thibault was a Loire river port for wine and timber shipping before the canal opened in 1838 and rail superseded river trade in the 1860s.
