River port of 563 berths on the Vilaine, 8 nautical miles upstream from the Arzal dam, in Morbihan, Brittany.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access from the sea goes through the Arzal lock, which regulates the Vilaine and sets a non-tidal river upstream. From the lock, follow the marked channel 6 nautical miles to reach La Roche-Bernard. On this reach the limiting air draught is set by overhead high-voltage cables, reported at around 32 metres and lower than the road bridge itself, so a tall rig should check clearance before proceeding. VHF 9 for the harbour office, maximum draught 6 metres at the pontoons.

Practical

Three basins: Vieux Port, Port Neuf and Rieux. Water and electricity on the pontoons, diesel fuel berth, crane and boatyard. Sanitary block with showers. Berthing on the floating pontoons costs less than on the finger pontoons, and this is one of the pricier Breton marinas. The harbour office is a fair walk from the Port Neuf pontoons and berthing assistance is not always on hand. Bakery, grocery, a Carrefour Express and Intermarche within 600 metres of the Vieux Port.

Ashore

Medieval village of La Roche-Bernard above the port, with granite houses from the 16th and 17th centuries around Place du Bouffay. Saturday morning market on Place du Pilori. GR 39 footpath runs through the village along the Vilaine cliffs.

History

La Roche-Bernard was founded around the 10th century by a Viking named Bernard. The first French ship of the line, La Couronne, was launched here in 1634 for Cardinal Richelieu's navy. The suspension bridge built in 1839 was the largest in the world at the time and destroyed during the 1944 Liberation.
