Approach and anchoring

Just outside the entrance of the Aber Ildut in north-west Brittany. Approach on the marked channel between Le Lieu and Men Tassin beacons, with strong ebb streams out of the aber. The entrance is narrow and best not attempted after dark without local knowledge. Sand and weed on the bottom; room to anchor can be hard to find, so many pick up a fore and aft mooring. Shelter improves once tucked in behind the corner. Open to W, E, SW, S and SE. L'Aber Ildut harbour 0.2 NM N, anchorage south of Ile Meulon 1.3 NM NW.

Practical

Forain anchorage with no services. Fuel, water and pontoon berths inside the Aber Ildut at Lanildut and Brelès. Lanildut is the leading seaweed-landing port in Europe for the brown-algae harvest.

Ashore

Sentier des douaniers GR 34 runs along the granite shore past the Porspaul beach and on to the Pointe de Corsen, the westernmost point of mainland France. Village shops at Lanildut within walking distance of the pontoons.

History

Granite quarried along the Aber Ildut shore was shipped from Lanildut in the 19th century and used, among other places, for the base of the Cleopatra Needle on the Thames Embankment in London.
