Approach and anchoring
Reached from the Mediterranean via the Caronte canal at Martigues, then 8 NM north across the étang. No tide inside the lagoon. The mud shelves gently, so anchor in 2 to 3 metres a short way off and stay off the reed beds close to shore, where the water shoals to under a metre.
Practical
Mud bottom. Shelter from N, W and NW, and the north shore gives a useful lee from the mistral, though the strongest gusts still reach across the open étang. Saint-Chamas harbour 1.5 NM NE, Istres-Les Heures Claires 1.6 NM S.
Ashore
Village of Saint-Chamas 1.5 NM NE, with the Roman Pont Flavien over the Touloubre river, a single arch bridge dated 12 BC with two triumphal arches, classified historic monument. A beach lies close to the anchorage.
