Approach and anchoring

An open roadstead with no shelter from the west or northwest, where the prevailing trade swell finds its way in. Holding is on sand and the spot is tenable only in settled trade-wind weather; the anchorage should be left at the first sign of a westerly. Haleiwa Boat Harbor lies 8 miles to the north-east and Ko Olina 13.6 miles to the south-east.

Ashore

The 853-acre Kaena Point State Park reaches around the northwestern tip of Oahu. A coastal track from the beach leads to Kaena Point itself, a nature reserve where Laysan albatross nest and Hawaiian monk seals haul out. There are no shops; the nearest provisions are at Waianae, well to the south.

History

Kaena Point holds deep significance in Hawaiian belief as a leina a ka uhane, a place from which the souls of the departed were thought to leap into the next world. The whole headland remains a sacred site to Native Hawaiians.
