Tidal harbour at the mouth of the Bresle, on the Normandy coast at the foot of 100 m chalk cliffs.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the SW along the cliff line, entry between two jetties with red and green lights; keep to starboard and wait for the green light. Wet basin behind a lock that opens approximately HW +/- 2h, check schedule with the harbour master. The entrance can be too shallow even when the lock is open, so watch the height of tide. Leaving at low water the current sets towards the green barrier poles, so keep close to starboard. Bar at the entrance can be dangerous with strong onshore winds and swell. Maximum draught 1.8 m over the sill. VHF channel 12.
Practical
6 visitor berths in the wet basin, shared with the fishing fleet and the small marina YCT. Water and electricity on the pontoons, no fuel berth, diesel by jerrycan from the town. Reckon on about 3.30 to 3.60 euros per metre a night, dear for this coast. Dated but clean showers with free hot water and no timer, but no WiFi; bring a hose for the free water tap. Chandlery and a small boatyard on the quay. All shops within 300 m on the quai François 1er, with a beer bar opposite the pontoon.
Ashore
Funicular from the quay up to the cliff top of Les Terrasses, free of charge, runs every few minutes. Sentier du littoral from the cliffs to Mers-les-Bains and beyond. Fish market on the quai François 1er every morning, selling the day's catch from the resident trawler fleet.
History
Le Tréport was the fashionable sea-bathing resort of Louis-Philippe, who built the Château d'Eu nearby as a royal residence and received Queen Victoria there twice, in 1843 and 1845. Queen Victoria landed at Le Tréport on both visits.
