Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open roadstead facing west on the leeward coast. The buoys take boats up to 20 m LOA and 5 m draught according to Navily. The 1902 wrecks are protected and anchoring is prohibited inside their marked perimeter. Call the harbour office on VHF 9.
Practical
Opened in December 2023 and run by SAEPP, which also operates Le Marin marina. Harbour office in the Maison de la Bourse on Place Bertin, staffed 7 days a week. Connected buoys with presence sensors, fresh water delivered to the boat, grey and black water collected by barge, clearance handled at the office. Book online or on +596 696 61 60 43.
Ashore
From Place Bertin the town is easy on foot: the ruined theatre, the Cyparis cell and the cathedral under restoration. The Manman Dlo underwater sculpture by Laurent Valère lies in 6 to 9 m off the southern end of town, marked by a yellow buoy.
History
On 8 May 1902 a pyroclastic flow from Montagne Pelée wiped out Saint-Pierre and killed around 28,000 people. The ships at anchor sank in the roadstead and their wrecks are now a protected dive site. In 2023 the volcanoes and forests of Montagne Pelée and the northern pitons were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Story
Ludger Sylbaris, known as Cyparis, was locked in a prison cell and became one of the very few survivors of 1902. His cell can still be visited among the ruins.
