Mooring on the Rhône between Roquemaure and Saint-Étienne-des-Sorts, in the Gard department, lower Rhône Valley.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

On the navigable Rhône, PK 234 area. The bed is soft mud with poor holding, and in a mistral the anchor can drag, one boat losing 32 m in an hour, so lay plenty of scope and keep a watch. The banks give some shelter but the mistral funnels through. Watch the downstream current, stronger after spring melt and autumn rains. Roquemaure town wall 4.8 NM south-east, Saint-Étienne-des-Sorts 5 NM north.

Practical

No dedicated services at the mooring. Basic stops with pontoons at Roquemaure and Saint-Étienne-des-Sorts.

Ashore

The right bank faces the Côtes du Rhône vineyards of Lirac AOC and Tavel AOC, the latter producing only rosé since the appellation was created in 1936. Châteauneuf-du-Pape village and its ruined castle lie 6 km east across the river. Roquemaure holds the tomb of Saint Valentine's relics brought from Rome in 1868.
