Guide
Approach and anchoring
The bay opens to the west and gives shelter from the prevailing winds off the land. There is a marked offshore mooring area for visiting yachts; anchoring takes care to avoid coral, so use a sand patch. Kailua Pier handles cruise-ship tenders and local boats.
Practical
Honokohau Harbour, the main small-boat harbour for Kona, lies about 2.4 miles north-west with fuel, berths and a fuel dock. Kailua-Kona town fronts the bay, with shops, provisions and restaurants within walking distance of the pier.
Ashore
Kamakahonu Beach, a sheltered strand of white sand at the north edge of the bay, was the residence of King Kamehameha I and holds the restored Ahuena Heiau temple. Kailua Pier is the start and finish of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship held each October.
