Guide
Approach and anchoring
The entrance is narrow and shallow, marked by a leading range that must be kept perfectly aligned on the way in and out. Most of the inner harbour is private, but the outer harbour offers anchorage. Swell can push a boat onto the reef if the range is lost, and a night entry is unwise without a chartplotter and depth sounder. Open to winds from the south and south-east.
History
An ancient heiau, a Hawaiian temple, once stood here, dedicated to Lono, the god of agriculture. Molokai Ranch later used the harbour to ship cattle and sugar to other islands.
Story
The harbour has been the start line of the Molokai Hoe outrigger canoe race across the Kaiwi Channel to Oahu since 1952.
