Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access via the Canal de Briare through the VNF lock network. The halt lies on the through canal. Keep to canal speed 6 km/h, mind the lock operating hours set by VNF.

Practical

Fourteen places alongside a masonry quay. The halt is free to stay, with free water and electricity; only the showers are charged, clean and with ample hot water. Toilets are locked from 19:00 to 9:30. The harbour office sells local produce and ice creams, and laundry is at the campsite next door. Bakery, butcher, small supermarket and several restaurants in the village, a short walk from the quay.

Ashore

Château de Châtillon-Coligny, seat of the Coligny family, 400 m from the quay. The keep dates from the 12th century and the Renaissance staircase tower is classed a Monument Historique. Musée Becquerel in the village tells the story of the physicist family born in Châtillon. Towpath cycle route to Briare and Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses.

History

Châtillon-Coligny was the cradle of Admiral Gaspard II de Coligny, leader of the French Protestants killed during the St Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572. The town also gave France the Becquerel dynasty of physicists, including Henri Becquerel, 1903 Nobel laureate for his work on radioactivity.
