History
The original village of Chenega on Chenega Island was destroyed by the tsunami of 27 March 1964 following the magnitude 9.2 earthquake, with a third of the population lost. Survivors were dispersed for two decades. In 1984 they established a new village on the higher ground above Crab Bay on Evans Island. In 1989, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the quake, the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound and oiled the beaches of Evans Island.
