Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south-east, staying clear of the oyster park markers that line the island's southern shore. A few free white visitor buoys lie a little off the beach, but numbers vary and there may be none. Holding is on sand, rock and mud: the anchor can skate on the edge of the bank, so on big tides drop on the mud further out and check the scope. It is rolly and better by day than overnight, with wash from the inter-island traffic and passing jet-skis. Sheltered from W through SE, fully exposed to N and NE winds.

Practical

Forain anchorage with no services. Nearest refuges are the Rade de l'île d'Aix at 1,1 NM SW and Châtelaillon-Plage at 3,5 NM NE in case the wind shifts north.

Ashore

Land by dinghy on the small sandy beach, watching for the rocks, and mind the sharp oysters on the foreshore at low water, worst on spring tides. The beach is backed by the Rivedoux-Plage seafront, with a bakery and small groceries in Rivedoux village around 800 m inland. Cycle path along the old railway line to La Flotte and Saint-Martin-de-Ré.
