Open anchorage off the Marseille corniche, between Vallon des Auffes 0.4 nm south and the Anse de la Réserve 0.5 nm east, in the 7th arrondissement.

Approach and anchoring

Sand and algae bottom, anchoring in 10 to 13 m. Beware of posidonia meadows, protected and not for anchoring; look for clear sand patches. Anchoring is allowed north-east of the breakwater but not on the south-west side, and two cables or pipes lie on the seabed about 30 to 40 m off the dike to the north in some 10 m, so keep clear. Shelter from W through SW to S, exposed to mistral and NW swell which builds quickly along the corniche. Wash from the shuttles and ferries running to the Vieux-Port sets up a roll by day, though nights are quieter. Respect the 300 m bathing limit off Catalans beach in summer.

Practical

No facilities at the anchorage. Vallon des Auffes at 0.4 nm south is a small fishermen's creek with bouillabaisse restaurants on the quay. Anse de la Réserve at 0.5 nm east gives access to the Corniche Kennedy waterfront.

Ashore

Catalans beach, the closest city beach to central Marseille, is directly inshore with changing rooms and a summer lifeguard post. The Palais du Pharo and its gardens overlook the Vieux-Port entrance 1 km NE. Château d'If and the Frioul archipelago ferry leaves from the Vieux-Port, 1.5 km by road.
