Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach at half tide or better. The bay dries extensively at low water over sand and mud banks. Hold offshore of the mussel bouchot lines and respect the marked channels leading to Pointe de l'Aiguillon. The outermost red buoy furthest from the beach shoals onto pebbles, where one shallow-draught boat touched at 1.2 metres. The anchor can be slow to set even with good ground tackle, and a westerly swell works in and makes the berth untenable. VHF 9.
Practical
Around 230 moorings managed locally, on sand, water available ashore. Boats drawing more than about 1.10 metres are not accepted on the moorings. A shuttle can land crews ashore. Exposed to S and SW winds blowing up the bay. Nearest refuges: Port de l'Aiguillon 4.7 NM E and La Faute-sur-Mer 5 NM E.
Ashore
Pointe de l'Aiguillon nature reserve borders the bay, a Natura 2000 site known for wading birds and mussel farming. Coastal path follows the dyke towards L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer village, about 3 km by land.
Story
The bay is the historical cradle of bouchot mussel farming, a technique documented on this coast since the 13th century.
