Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the N between Île du Levant and Port-Cros. 30 visitors' buoys laid by the park authority from April to October, private anchoring forbidden on posidonia. Sand, rock and algae bottom. The buoys lie well off the shore and the cove rolls in any W swell. VHF 9 for the park ranger. Shelter from NE through E to S. Open to the W.
Practical
30 moorings on buoys, free by day from 8am to 6pm; for the night, book and pay online at portcros.smartwaters.com or via the QR code on the buoy, the reservation lapsing if unpaid within the hour. Expect about 17 to 50 euros by length, and signal is weak on site so book before arriving. No water or power. Land the tender at the harbour dinghy pontoon. Port-Cros village 0.3 NM NE has restaurants, a small grocery, park visitor centre and ferry to Hyères.
Ashore
Sentier des plantes and sentier de Port-Man start at the village 0.3 NM NE and cross the island through oak and strawberry-tree woods. Plage de la Palud 1.5 km E of the village, with a marked underwater trail run by the national park. Fort de l'Estissac with park exhibitions 20 minutes on foot from the village.
History
Port-Cros became France's first marine national park in 1963, covering the island and a belt of sea 600 m offshore.
